Dock Ellis on LSD

November 15, 2009

You’ve heard of the legendary no-hitter that Doc Ellis pitched on LSD, right? Well, I’d explain this whole tale to you, but someone at No Mas made a video of the event that sums it up nicely…and it’s way more entertaining than I could have ever written. Don’t miss this one, it’s fantastic.

Backstop Boys Show

November 12, 2009

I’m not sure how many folks read this blog from back east, but if you’re in the New Jersey/Manhattan area this weekend, I’ll be doing a baseball card show on Saturday called The Backstop Boys. I’ll be selling my book and signing from 2-3 o’clock.

Just about every catcher who ever played in New York (for the Mets or Yankees) will be there….Yogi Berra, Joe Torre, Ivan Rodriguez, etc.   And a lot of other guys too….Don Mattingly, Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Bob Boone, Mike Matheny, etc.

Here’s what the flyer looks like. For more information click here. Hope to see you there!

One last thing, I did an article for Baseball Analytics…follow this link if you’d like to read it.

Does anybody else see a similarity between the new Sammy Sosa and the late gangster Al Capone?

Yankees 2009 World Champs

November 5, 2009

A big congratulations to the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees. I don’t care how much money they spent, they still had to have all the pieces of the puzzle come together at the right time, and they still had to overcome all the obstacles that are an inevitable part of a big league season.

Add to that the tremendous pressure to win in the Big Apple and you’ve got to tip your hat. They deserve to be the last team standing. They were resilient, talented, tough, had a nice game plan and executed it well, and for the first time in a long time – had chemistry and character. They looked like they were enjoying the game of baseball.

Off the top of my head, some highlights and thoughts from this postseason…

Great early games, comebacks and momentum shifts galore. Bad baserunning. Even worse umpiring. The relentless offensive pressure that the Phils and Yanks put on teams…if pitchers got a pitch up or out over the plate, it generally got mashed.

The double steal by Damon, the big hits of Matsui, the dominance of Rivera, the perseverance of Pettite, the up and downs of Martinez and Lidge, the crushing of Utley, A-Rod and Werth. The strikeouts of Howard, the defensive struggles of Posada, the gems of Sabathia and Lee, and Swisher’s tremendous slump.

It was a great postseason all the way around. Thank you to all the teams for the great memories. I’ve got to say, this baseball thing was a great invention. I had a lot of fun playing it, and I’m really starting to enjoy being a fan.

Now we’re gonna have to rely on the McCourts to keep us entertained till next season!
