I'm an old catcher who wore a cup and a jock to work everyday for 12 years. To me the word stat is a four letter word. Just like what a catcher does for a pitching staff or a utility guy or bench player does for the clubhouse the word to be used is'nt unmeasureable ( undetectable ) but immeasureable. I hate if that messes with all the rotisierre or fantasy league formulas, but that"s why some get paid to play and others pay to play fantasy. The reason alien shaped headed people like Keith Woolner can't detect it is because it can't be detected through a computer screen: you have to actually be there in a uniform on the roster from spring training to the last pitch of the season to detect it.

OMG! I totally remember Clint Hurdle. He was a player in Venezuela for a while which I found to be weird, hot, awesome, scary, confusing and courageous. Every time he took the field for the Mets my friends Sally, Candace, Mary Beth, Jo Jo, Lucy and Jax would go into an absolute patriotic fervor. I felt such a connection to him, and we would go to the local Mets bars and wait for him. I would wear my denim skort and Mets halter top, with some tube socks and famolares.

I would love to contact him. I read somewhere that he loved broccoli casserole, can you please give him this recipe from my Aunt Jax?
Ingredients

o 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed
          o 2 large onions, diced
          o 6 tablespoons butter
          o 1 tablespoon lemon juice
o 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
          o 3 tablespoons flour
          o 1 cup heavy cream
          o 1 cup milk
          o 1/2 teaspoon salt
o 8 ounces swiss cheese, separated
o 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
o 2 cups dry pasta noodles

Directions

   1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a large casserole dish. Slice mushrooms, separate broccoli, dice onions and cube the raw chicken. Boil the pasta (start next step while it's cooking), drain and set aside.
   2. Saute chicken and onions in butter until chicken is white, stirring constantly. Sprinkle with lemon juice, add mushrooms and and cook an additional 3 minutes at reduced heat. Transfer chicken and onions to casserole dish, reserving any juices in the frying pan.
   3. Add flour to the juices in the frying pan, cook and stir for 2 minutes. Add cream, milk and salt, bring to a boil, whisking constantly. Reduce heat and simmer to thicken, still whisking. Add 6 oz Swiss cheese, continue to simmer and stir until cheese melts.
   4. Pour cream sauce over chicken in the casserole dish. Add noodles and broccoli, gently stir to combine. Top with remaining 2 oz Swiss cheese.
   5. Bake covered at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until bubbly throughout.

We live in Hemet now, and knowing that you are with the Padres will ensure many trips to San Diego to see games. it's only me and Lucy now - Aunt Jax succumbed to a rare hair disease, Candace fell out of a tree, Sally & Mary Beth went to open a chain of chicken shacks in Belize but should be back in the states during the rainy season, and we simply lost touch with Jo Jo.

Great blog, really excellent and soulful.

What you say, Brent, makes absolute sense to even a layman like me. But, as you must be aware, Baseball Prospectus' writer Keith Woolner (and others) concluded that even if catchers do have an effect on pitchers' abilities to prevent runs, it is undetectable (through statistical analysis and stats like CERA) and thus the stats have no practical usage. What do you say to that? My guess is "The stats just aren't sophisticated enough to show what is really happening".

another positive is that it can help avoid cramping and fatigue with engaging different sets of muscles throughout the game... almost like stretching while playing. good tip.

Brent, I remember a while back you had a post on framing. I noticed both catchers framing pitches at times. I generally don't mind it, but sometimes it looked like they moved the glove six inches or so. It didn't seem to sway the umpires at all. Of course, I'm mentioning this in good humor. I really liked Mr. Molina. He may be a slow runner, but he is very quick behind the plate, blocking pitches in the dirt and going after the ones that squirted a few feet away. I was quite impressed with him.
